This volume consists of the Proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on Zygaenidae held in conjunction with the 10th Innsbrucker Lepidopterologengesprach from 4-8 September 2000 in Innsbruck, Austria, under the auspices of the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum. At the Symposium, authors from Europe and Asia presented papers on taxonomy, phylogeny, biology, biochemistry, genetics, biogeography, conservation and pest control in relation to the family Zygaenidae (Insecta: Lepidoptera).

The contributions include a completely new phylogeny of the subfamily Chalcosiinae, based on profound cladistic investigations. New information on the distribution of the Zygaenidae, the descriptions of hitherto unknown females, morphological research on chaetotaxy, as a result of which there are some systematic changes in the Procridinae, are provided. Moreover, new bionomic data on life histories, foodplants, mating behaviour, cocoon construction, photoperiodism, diapause, pheromones and new data on genetics are given. The current situation of the taxonomy of, and the first check-list for, the Zygaenidae of China is presented. Contributions on pest control and a comprehensive bibliographic summary of the Zygaenidae as pest species are followed by a description of successful conservation attempts of some species of the Zygaenidae.

The production of this book is through the collaboration of the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, Naturwissenschaftliche Sammlungen, Innsbruck, Austria, with the Crimean State Medical University, Simferopol, Crimea, Ukraine.

The present book forms the second of a newly launched series of volumes on the Zygaenidae by the Crimean State Medical University Press. The first volume, A Review of the Western Palaearctic Procridinae, by
K. A. Efetov, was published in 2001. The third volume, The Zygaenidae (Lepidoptera) of the Crimea and other regions of Eurasia, by
K. A. Efetov, is expected to appear at the end of 2003. The fourth volume, An Illustrated Distribution Atlas of Forester Moths, by K. A. Efetov &
G. M. Tarmann, is in preparation.
