Professor Dr Dr Konstantin A. Efetov is the Head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and the Chair of Biological Chemistry at the Crimean State Medical University (Simferopol). His main scientific interests are in the field of molecular immunology, evolutionary biology and biosystematics, with special emphasis on the family Zygaenidae (Lepidoptera). K. A. Efetov is the author of 170 scientific publications, 85 of them devoted to systematics, biology, zoogeography and molecular biology of the Zygaenidae. His last book 'A Review of the Western Palaearctic Procridinae (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae)' (2001), is a comprehensive work summarizing contemporary knowledge of the western Palaearctic Procridinae. He has described 16 new Zygaenidae
species, including two
from the western Palaearctic region (Adscita
krymensis and Jordanita fazekasi), revised
some groups of the Procridinae (e.g. the genera Zygaenoprocris,
Adscita and Jordanita), described 3 new
genera and 7 subgenera of the subfamilies Procridinae and
Chalcosiinae. Moreover, he was the first fieldworker to
discover that Geraniaceae is a host-plant family of the
Zygaenidae and he has described the biology and early
stages of many species (e.g. Zygaenoprocris taftana,
Z. minna, Adscita subtristis, A.
albanica, Jordanita budensis, J.
paupera, J. volgensis, J. graeca, J.
horni, Zygaena sedi). The author has
participated in many scientific expeditions and
collecting trips in different regions of the Ukraine
(1970-2002), Armenia (1976, 1992, 1995, 2000), Azerbaijan
(1976), Georgia (1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1983, 1992),
Northern Caucasus (1976, 1981, 1983, 1989), northern part
of European Russia (1982), Kirghizia (1996), Turkmenistan
(1981, 1990, 1992), Uzbekistan, 1996), France (1993,
1996), Germany (1993), Italy (2000), Poland (1979),
Scotland (1996), Spain (1993, 1996, 2002), Turkey (1999).
He has presented his scientific results at many
International Congresses and Symposia in Finland (1992),
Germany (1993, 1997), Czech Republic (1994), Spain
(1996), Great Britain (1996), Belgium (1998), Austria
(2000) and Denmark (2002). At the present time K. A.
Efetov is working in a new scientific direction, viz.
monoclonal immunosystematics, which allows him to
investigate relationships within biological species,
based on the study of their proteins with the help of
monoclonal antibodies. |

Dr Gerhard M. Tarmann is Head of Department of Natural History of Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, Innsbruck, Austria. His main interests are the ecology and biology of high-mountain Lepidoptera and the taxonomy, systematics, phylogeny, ecology and biology of the family Zygaenidae. He published more than 100 scientific papers and is author or co-author of several books. He described 6 new genera and more than 50 new species worldwide, among them 30 Zygaenidae, partly in co-authorship with Prof. Dr K. A. Efetov (Simferopol, Crimea, Ukraine) and Dr P. Huemer (Innsbruck, Austria). The author has undertaken several expeditions to North Africa, the Near and Middle East, Central Asia, South East Asia, Australia and Central America, amongst them the first entomological survey of the top of Mt. Losir
in northern Sumatra. He
discovered several new species and 6 species in different
groups of insects are named after him. He also discovered
an androconial organ in the Noctuidae that has been
described as 'Tarmann's organ'. G. M. Tarmann presented
his results on various congresses and symposia and he
organized the 7th International Symposium on Zygaenidae
in Innsbruck, Austria, from 4-8 September 2000. At
present the author is working on a revision of the
Australian Zygaenidae. Moreover, together with Prof. Dr
K. A. Efetov, he is working on standards for the use of
the Zygaenidae as indicator species for environmental
monitoring and Zygaenidae as pest species, especially on
the biological control of the Vine-Bud-Moth Theresimima
ampellophaga (Bayle-Barelle, 1808). |

Dr W. Gerald Tremewan was born at Mt Hawke, a village near the city of Truro, Cornwall, Great Britain, on 2 January 1931, andwas educated at Redruth Grammar School and Cornwall Technical College. He obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, for his research on the genetics of the geographical and individual variation of Zygaena species, a group that he has studied for more than 50 years. Now retired, he was formerly employed as a research scientist and scientific editor in the Department of Entomology at The Natural History Museum, London (formerly the British Museum (Natural History)). With reference to the Zygaenidae, he is interested in their biology, ecology and genetics, especially the Zygaena species.
In order to enhance his
study of the latter group, he has travelled widely
throughout Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and the
Himalayas and, whenever possible, continues to visit
these regions. In addition to Entomology, he is
interested in Ornithology, Botany, general Natural
History and Conservation. He is a life member of the
Institute of Biology (London), a Life Member of the
Cornwall Wildlife Trust, a Member of Societas Europaea
Lepidopterologica, a Member and past President of the
British Entomological and Natural History Society, a Life
Member of the National Trust (for England), a member of
Sociedad Entomologica Aragonesa, the Editor of
Entomologist's Gazette (a quarterly journal on
Palaearctic entomology), an Associate Editor of Moths and
Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland, and a former
Editor of Noctuidae Europaeae. Other interests include
classical music, especially that from the XVI and XVII
centuries, and the classical guitar, which he plays
moderately well. |
