Zygaenidae Books

A Review of the Western Palaearctic Procridinae

By K. A. Efetov.

ISBN 966-7348-07-5. 2001.

More than two years have passed since the publication by Apollo Books of the last revision of Forester moths (Efetov & Tarmann, 1999), a book having stimulated intensive investigations of the Procridinae. New data on the morphology and biology of Forester moths, the chaetotaxy of the first instar larvae and karyotypes have essentially increased our knowledge; as a consequence, there have been many systematic changes.

All these new data are incorporated into a review of the western Palaearctic Procridinae with revised determination keys. The boundaries of the western Palaearctic region as accepted in this work include North Africa, whole Europe and some territories of Asia: Northern Caucasus of Russia, Transcaucasia, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan.
The book consists of introduction; chapter about characters of Zygaenidae; check-list of all known Forester moths (the order of species and systematic position of many species significantly different if compare with the earlier published check-lists); keys, to genera, subgenera and species; systematic part devoted to all five genera of Forester moths (Theresimima Strand, 1917, Rhagades Wallengren, 1863, Zygaenoprocris Hampson, 1900, Adscita Retzius, 1783, and Jordanita Verity, 1946) and 73 plates with line drawings and colour illustrations. 98 text-figs represented by photographs of chromosomes, diagrams of chaetotaxy, drawings of male and female antennae, legs, wing venation, pupae and distribution maps are also provided.
Information about each species is presented by following rubrics: type-locality, characters, differential diagnosis, larval foodplants, biotopes, flight period, distribution. Every species is figured by colour paintings of both sexes and line drawings of male and female genitalia. A list of the literature includes 263 references. In the end of the book the reader can find complete indexes of Lepidoptera names, larval host-plants and authors who described valid taxa.
The author is together with Dr G. M. Tarmann the leading authority in the group and the book is essential to professional entomologists as well as for amateurs interested in the Zygaenidae.
